What Are Your Privacy Resolutions?

Program Plans for 2021

· Privacy Operations,US Law Updates,Int'l Law Updates

After the terrible year that was 2020, most of us are wondering whether New Year's resolutions are even worth it any more. Although the continuation of the global pandemic might sap our motivation to adopt resolutions to be our best selves, making some plans for your privacy program for 2021 is still a good idea. Not sure where to focus? Here are some ideas:

Think Globally

Look at news about laws recently adopted and pending bills in other countries. Some major changes have come about or expected in countries such as Brazil, New Zealand, and Canada. Don't forget about the impact of the 6-month extension for Brexit!

Work Closely with Security

Some privacy functions rarely intersect with security, to their peril. A close working relationship with the security function allows for better coordination of practices, and a greater ability to work through incidents quickly. It also helps in understanding data flows and their impact on vendor contracts. This is the year to change that and make friends with security. If you find your technical knowledge is limited, a buddy in security will be more than happy to explain technical matters to you. Your privacy program will reap the benefits!

Anticipate Change

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is hard to make plans too far into the future. Therefore, building flexibility into your program by anticipating change will allow you to adapt. More regulation of data collection and data flows is the wave of the future, so expect that you will likely be involved in projects reflecting those continuous changes. Just as a compliance program is not static, neither is a privacy program.

Be Realistic

The pandemic has reshaped the way in which we all work, and in some ways, that might hamper a privacy officer's ability to accomplish all their goals for their program. If remote work is hindering your efforts, take this year to firm up your program's foundations: update your data maps, focus on training and communications, review and update policies. Since privacy is ever-changing, continuous improvement is also a realistic goal.
